Midwifery Training

Fernandez Hospital

Professional Midwifery Education and Training (PMET) Programme

As a provider of quality maternal health, Fernandez Foundation felt the need to have a select group of skilled nurses trained especially to promote and deliver, effective health care that can save the lives of thousands of mothers and newborn every year. With this in mind, the Hospital piloted a two-year Professional Midwifery Education and Training (PMET) Programme in August 2011. Tutors / midwives come regularly from the UK, to help train batches of student nurses.

Objectives of the Programme

  • To provide education and training of professional midwives, using a syllabus that incorporates all the competencies of the International Confederation of Midwives. The syllabus also includes topics from the Indian Nursing Council’s Nurse Practitioner in Advanced Midwifery Diploma Course.
  • To incorporate further elements to ensure that midwives can deliver and promote high quality effective care, and hence be equipped to manage nonhigh risk pregnancies, deliveries, introduce comprehensive antenatal care and routine childbirth preparation classes for mothers from all social backgrounds.
