Globally every year, over 500,000 women, a quarter of them Indians, die of pregnancy related causes. The number of infants dying at birth, or soon after, are many times more. Most of these lives could be saved if they had access to timely, affordable and quality maternity care.
MIDWIVES SAVE LIVES
The Fernandez hospital Educational and Research Foundation is collaborating with Fernandez hospital in promoting the concept of PROMISE. The Foundation’s Professional Midwifery Services campaign focuses on selecting the right candidates to be educated and trained as midwives within the maternity hospital environment. They will then become the frontline of maternal health provision, interacting with colleagues across primary, secondary and tertiary care services

Pregnancy, birthing and bonding with the newborn baby are significant phases in a woman’s journey to motherhood. Women when given the right knowledge as part of the preparation, enjoy a positive birthing experience. This essentially means she has been given the freedom to make choices during labour, assured of a birth companion of her choice, encouraged to birth in the position she feels comfortable and finally enjoys holding her baby to her chest (skin-to-skin).
